Window Swap is a website that lets you look out of someone else’s window. Press the button, and you get ten unhurried minutes of a stranger’s view: a balcony in Lisbon, snow falling on a garden in Sapporo, laundry lines in Mumbai, traffic somewhere you cannot name. Real people filmed these from their real homes and gave them away.

It sounds like nothing. It is quietly one of the loveliest sites ever built.

What is Window Swap?

The idea was born out of being stuck indoors: if you’re tired of your own view, borrow someone else’s. Two people in Singapore turned that into a website, asked the internet to send in videos of their windows, and the internet delivered.

There is one control that matters: Open a new window somewhere in the world. Click it and a video fills the screen, labeled with the name of whoever submitted it and where they live. No feed. No likes. No comments section. Just a window, a name, a place.

What lands hardest is how ordinary the clips are. Nobody is showing off. A woman’s houseplants half-block the frame. A cat walks across the sill and leaves. Someone’s neighbor mows a lawn in the far distance. You are watching an unremarkable Tuesday in a country you have never visited, and it is riveting precisely because nothing happens.

The sound does a lot of the work, too. Birds, rain on a roof, a distant scooter, a language you don’t speak drifting up from the street. Close your eyes and you’re mostly there.

What can you do on Window Swap?

• Click the button. Repeat. That’s the core loop and it never gets old.
• Read the label. Every window comes with a first name and a location. It reframes the whole thing from “content” to “a person let me stand at their window.”
• Let one play out. The clips run long on purpose. Give one a full ten minutes and something usually happens: weather turns, light shifts, someone walks into frame.
• Turn the sound up. Ambience is half the experience. Muted, it’s a screensaver; unmuted, it’s a place.
• Submit your own window. Steady camera, no talking, roughly ten minutes, from a window in your own home. Your boring view is somebody else’s holiday.

Tips to get the most out of it

Use it as a second monitor. Full-screen a window on a spare display and leave it running while you work. It is the calmest wallpaper imaginable, and it changes when you want it to.

Don’t shuffle too fast. The instinct is to click through twenty windows in three minutes. Resist. The site rewards patience, the good moments are the ones you’d have skipped past.

Hunt for weather. Rain windows are the best windows. Keep clicking until you find one, then stop and stay a while. Thunder in another hemisphere is free therapy.

Note the light. Because clips come from everywhere, you can hop from a bright afternoon to a blue-hour dusk in one click. Two windows in a row from opposite times of day is a strange, good feeling.

Film yours in one clean take. If you submit, mount the phone on something solid, wipe the glass, and don’t narrate. The rule is simple: film the view you’d want to be given.
