Drive & Listen: Cruise 100+ Cities With Local Radio

Drive & Listen is a free website that drops you into the passenger seat of a car rolling through a real city, with that city’s local radio playing. Pick Tokyo, Lisbon, Havana or Karachi from a list of more than a hundred, and you are instantly moving through actual streets with actual local voices coming out of the dashboard.

What is Drive & Listen?

Built by Erkam Şeker, Drive & Listen pairs two very simple ingredients: dashcam footage of a genuine drive through a city, and a live stream of a radio station broadcasting in that city. Separately they are ordinary. Together they produce something unreasonably good.

The reason it works is that it is not a tour. Nobody points out landmarks. You just watch traffic, shopfronts, weather, laundry on balconies, a guy crossing against the light, the texture of a place rather than its highlights. And the radio underneath it is not curated for tourists either. You get local ads, local presenters talking about local things, and songs that are enormous there and unknown to you.

Ten minutes in Ho Chi Minh City this way tells you more about the place than an hour of travel videos.

The city list is enormous and delightfully uneven. Alongside Paris and New York you will find Lauterbrunnen, Samarkand, Bacolod, Dakar, Trabzon and Presidente Prudente. That imbalance is a feature. The famous cities are fine. The ones you have never heard of are the reason to keep clicking.

What can you do on Drive & Listen?

• Pick any of 100+ cities across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania, and switch between them instantly.
• Balance the mix. Sliders control the radio volume and the ambient city and traffic sound independently. Radio up for a road trip feel, city sound up for pure ambience.
• Change the driving speed so the footage rolls at whatever pace suits your mood.
• Hide the interface and let the whole thing go full screen, which is what you want on a second monitor.
• Use it as a work background. It is a rare piece of ambience that is interesting without demanding attention.
• Travel on purpose. Line up a few cities in one region and drive them back to back. The differences in road design, signage and driving culture are fascinating.

Tips to get the most out of it

1. Put it on the second monitor and mute nothing. The single best configuration: city sounds at about seventy percent, radio low, full screen, and you working next to it. It is calmer than music and less distracting than a podcast.
2. Go for the unfamiliar cities first. Everyone clicks Tokyo. Then everyone clicks Paris. The magic is really in Samarkand, Dakar, Guwahati and Bacolod, places with almost no travel footage in your feed.
3. Turn the radio all the way up sometimes. Local ad breaks are a genuinely underrated window into a country. You learn what people buy, what they worry about, and what a phone number sounds like there.
4. Try the same country at different sizes. Drive a capital and then a smaller city in the same country back to back. The contrast does something a single city cannot.
5. Use it to wind down. Late-evening footage in a rainy city with soft radio is one of the better sleep-adjacent things on the internet.
6. Send someone their hometown. It is the fastest way to make somebody homesick in a nice way.
