Wolfram Alpha: Ask a Question, Get an Actual Answer
Wolfram Alpha computes answers instead of listing links, math, science, units, dates, nutrition and data, all worked out from curated knowledge. Free to use.
Wolfram Alpha is a search box that does the work instead of pointing at someone else who might have done it. Type “integral of x sin x”, “40 knots in km/h”, “calories in 3 bananas” or “distance from Earth to Mars today” and it computes the answer, plots it, and hands you related facts you did not ask for.
No ten blue links. No SEO sludge. Just the number, worked out.
What is Wolfram Alpha?
Launched in 2009 by Stephen Wolfram, it is built on the Mathematica computation engine plus an enormous pile of curated, checked data, physical constants, chemical properties, country statistics, food composition, astronomical positions, financial history, word frequencies. The difference from a normal search engine is fundamental: a search engine indexes documents, Wolfram Alpha indexes knowledge and then does arithmetic on it.
That is why it feels a bit like magic when it works. Ask it to compare the GDP of two countries and it does not find a page about that comparison, it pulls two datasets and builds the chart on the spot. Ask it for the weather in Reykjavik on the day you were born and it goes and gets it.
It also quietly powers chunks of assistants you already use, which is why some voice queries come back suspiciously well-formatted.
What can you do on Wolfram Alpha?
- Math of nearly any kind. Solve equations, factor polynomials, take derivatives and integrals, invert matrices, plot in 2D and 3D, run statistics. It is a graphing calculator that understands English.
- Convert anything into anything. Units, currencies, timezones, dates, number bases, obscure historical measures. “13 furlongs in meters” is a valid query.
- Ask science questions. Chemical formulas and reactions, orbital positions, half-lives, material properties, human anatomy data.
- Query real-world data. Populations, life expectancy, earthquake history, stock prices over time, weather records, election results.
- Nutrition and everyday stuff. Food comparisons, BMI, mortgage payments, tip splitting, how long until a date.
- Word and language play. Anagrams, word frequencies, rhymes, crossword-style pattern matching, name popularity over decades.
- Plot in one line. Type a function and get a graph instantly, no axes configuration ritual required.
Tips to get the most out of it
Be lazy with syntax. You do not need to write proper notation. “derivative of x^3 sinx”, “solve 2x+7=19”, “3 cups flour in grams” all parse fine. It is designed to guess what you meant.
Click “More” on every result block. Answers come as panels, and most panels have a hidden expansion with alternate forms, series expansions, or extra data. That is where the real depth sits.
Use it as a sanity checker. Type your own answer as an expression alongside the original and see if they match. It catches sign errors faster than staring at your notes ever will.
Try comparisons with “vs”. “France vs Japan population”, “gold vs silver density”, “coffee vs tea caffeine”. The engine builds a side-by-side automatically and it is one of the fastest ways to learn something.
Ask about a date. “March 12 1987” returns the day of the week, notable events, moon phase and how long ago it was. Great for birthday facts and mildly unsettling for anniversaries.
Explore the Examples pages. There are hundreds of query templates organized by subject. Half the fun of the site is discovering it can answer a category of question you never thought to ask.

Frequently asked questions
What is Wolfram Alpha?
Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine: you type a question in plain language and it computes an answer from curated data and algorithms rather than searching the web for pages. It handles mathematics, physics, chemistry, unit conversion, statistics, dates, geography, nutrition and much more, and shows results as worked output, tables and plots.
Is Wolfram Alpha free?
The main site is free to use with no account, and it answers the vast majority of queries at no cost. A paid Pro subscription adds extras such as step-by-step solutions, file uploads, longer computation times and data downloads, but you never need it to get an answer.
How is Wolfram Alpha different from a search engine?
A search engine finds pages that might contain your answer; Wolfram Alpha calculates the answer itself. Ask it to integrate a function, convert 40 knots to kilometers per hour, or compare the populations of two countries and it returns a computed result with plots and related data instead of a list of blue links.
Can Wolfram Alpha show step-by-step math solutions?
Yes, for many algebra, calculus and equation-solving problems it can show the intermediate steps rather than just the final answer. Step-by-step solutions are part of the paid Pro tier, though the free version still gives you the result, the plot and alternate forms of the expression.
