The answer, it turns out, is thousands of people. The site collects them, picks one at random, and puts them on your screen. You arrive as the only viewer. Often they notice within seconds.

What is Nobody.live?

Twitch’s front page is a leaderboard. It shows you what is already popular, because that is what keeps people watching, which makes the popular thing more popular. Somewhere far below that sorted list is an enormous tail of channels that are live right now with an audience of nobody at all.

Nobody.live is a window straight into that tail. It watches Twitch’s live channel data and maintains a list of streams currently sitting at zero viewers. Hit the button and you get one, embedded with its chat, chosen at random from however many thousand currently qualify. The counter on the page telling you how many empty streams exist right now is quietly the most interesting number on the site.

What you actually find is not what people expect. Not just teenagers playing shooters to an empty room, though there is plenty of that. Someone practicing guitar. Someone doing homework with a webcam pointed at their desk. A person in another time zone assembling furniture. Chess. Speedruns of games from 1998. Long silences. Someone’s cat.

Tips to get the most out of it
