The Feynman Lectures on Physics are the most celebrated physics lectures ever given, and Caltech puts all three volumes on the open web for free. Not a scanned PDF. Not a paywalled preview. A properly built web edition with real typeset equations, redrawn figures, and text you can search, on a site with no ads and nothing to sign up for.

What are the Feynman Lectures?

In 1961 Caltech had a problem: its introductory physics course was boring the students it most wanted to keep. So it asked Richard Feynman to teach it. He did, for two years, to a lecture hall that filled up with faculty and graduate students standing at the back.

The lectures were recorded and transcribed, and became three volumes that have never gone out of print. Volume I handles mechanics, radiation and heat. Volume II is electromagnetism and matter. Volume III is quantum mechanics, taught in a way that had essentially never been attempted with undergraduates.

They are famously not a good first textbook, which Feynman himself half-admitted. There are not enough problems, the pacing is merciless, and a student trying to survive a semester may find them more inspiring than useful. What they are is the best explanation of physics by someone who understood it completely and refused to hide behind formalism. Chapter after chapter takes a thing you thought you understood and shows you the actual mechanism underneath.

The online edition exists because Michael Gottlieb and Rudolf Pfeiffer spent years building it with Caltech’s cooperation, working from the corrected text rather than an image scan. That distinction matters enormously. Equations are rendered as mathematics, so they stay crisp at any zoom, reflow reasonably on a phone, and can be selected. Figures were redrawn rather than photographed. Decades of accumulated errata are already applied.

It is, quietly, one of the best-executed pieces of publishing on the web, and it is free because Caltech decided it should be.

  • Jump straight to a single chapter. The table of contents lists every chapter by title, so you can drop in on angular momentum or the principle of least action without touching the rest.
  • Zoom the equations. Because the math is properly typeset rather than an image, it scales cleanly and stays readable on a small screen.
  • Search the text. The full text is indexed, which is how you find the chapter where he explains a thing you half-remember.

Tips to get the most out of it

Start with Volume I, Chapter 1. It contains the famous line about the atomic hypothesis being the single sentence worth passing to the next civilization. It is four pages, it needs no math, and it tells you immediately whether the rest of this is for you.

Do not try to read it linearly like a novel. Feynman assumes you will circle back. Read a chapter, put it down, do something else, and read it again in a week. The second pass is where it lands.

Read the ones on subjects you already know. The real pleasure is watching him rebuild something you learned mechanically years ago and discovering there was a reason for it. The chapters on conservation laws and on symmetry are good places to feel this.

Use a large screen for Volume II. Vector calculus and multi-line derivations fight with a phone. Volume I survives a commute. Volume II wants a desk.

Pair it with problems from somewhere else. The lectures deliberately skip the drill work. If you want the material to stick, run a conventional problem set alongside it, which is where a free textbook is a natural companion.

Skip ahead to Volume III when you get curious. The quantum volume opens with the double-slit experiment and it is the clearest treatment of it anywhere. You do not need to have finished the other two volumes to get something out of it.
